Universitas Andalas oversees and maintains an extensive range of campus buildings, covering approximately 722,994 square meters. This comprehensive maintenance program includes various infrastructure systems such as a micro-hydro power plant, air conditioning systems, solar roofing, and others, ensuring that all facilities operate efficiently and sustainably. The scope of construction and upkeep also extends to essential campus amenities, including access ramps for universal accessibility, community cafés, and ablution facilities, all of which contribute to the overall functionality, inclusivity, and comfort of the campus environment.
Out of the university’s total land area of 4,711,979 square meters, the portion that is actively operated and maintained constitutes over 75–99% of the campus infrastructure. This significant proportion demonstrates Universitas Andalas’s strong commitment to sustainability and the continuous improvement of its physical environment, supporting high-quality education, research, and community engagement.
The university is also dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of its academic community, including individuals with disabilities and nursing mothers. Universitas Andalas has established the Unit Layanan Disabilitas Universitas Andalas (ULD Unand), a dedicated office that provides assistance, advocacy, and accessibility support for students and staff with disabilities. This unit plays a crucial role in ensuring that the university’s policies, facilities, and academic practices are aligned with the principles of equal access and participation.
Facilities for persons with disabilities include designated parking spaces, wheelchair-accessible pathways, and restrooms equipped with safety handles to ensure ease of mobility and safety. In addition, Universitas Andalas provides dedicated maternity and childcare support. A private lactation room is available for breastfeeding staff at the Padusi Corner in the university library, offering a comfortable and private space for nursing mothers as well as a supportive area for women experiencing menstrual discomfort. The Padusi Corner’s thoughtful design reflects the university’s commitment to care, inclusivity, and gender-responsive spaces.
Furthermore, the campus houses a daycare facility for educators and staff, reinforcing Universitas Andalas’s efforts toward women’s empowerment. Gradually, the university is advancing toward the implementation of universal design principles, representing an important step in its transformation into a green, inclusive, and sustainable campus that welcomes and supports all members of its community, including vulnerable groups.
